A transparent vessel holds goldfish at the centre, surrounded by plants and painted surfaces that fill almost the whole picture. This puzzle focuses on shapes and contrasts.

A Matisse puzzle guided by colour

The fish immediately attract attention with their red accents. They stand out against the clear water in a composition dominated by foliage. Large green leaves, pink touches and dark areas create groups of pieces that are easy to spot visually, even if joining them requires careful observation.

The vessel’s shape and the rounded surface beneath it provide guiding lines. As assembly progresses, these contours connect the centre to the edges of the painting. Some areas rely on broad blocks of colour, others on many small touches. This variety offers different reference points and ways to approach each part of the image.

Choosing your first reference points

Start by separating pieces bearing a fragment of fish, then look for the curves of the vessel. Large leaves offer another useful group. Instead of putting all the greens in one pile, try separating lighter and deeper areas, and defined outlines from more uniform surfaces.

The image also lends itself to a shared session: one person can study the plants while another works on the centre. This is not a prescribed player count, simply a way of dividing the observation. Leave enough room to set down small sections without constantly moving them.

Poissons rouges puzzle details

Brand: Piatnik.

Reference: 5730.

Artist depicted: Henri Matisse.

Design: Poissons rouges.

Contents: one 1,000-piece puzzle.

Assembled dimensions: 68 x 48 cm.

The finished format needs a clear, flat surface. Allow extra space around the puzzle to organise pieces awaiting their place. The photographed model is shown vertically: this keeps the scene in the same orientation as the box image during assembly.

For admirers of expressive paintings

This art puzzle suits someone drawn to bold colours, painted plants or Matisse’s work. Its interest lies as much in discoveries during assembly as in the finished image. A small pink mark or dark line, almost secondary at first glance, can become the detail linking two groups.

Keep the pieces dry during use and storage. Handle pieces without bending them and do not force uncertain joins. After placing the final piece, view the painting from a distance before taking it apart: the isolated shapes regain their balance around the fish at the centre of attention.
