DescriptionDescription
The Opinel Les Essentiels Natural set brings together four small kitchen tools with varnished beech handles: a paring knife, a serrated knife, a curved vegetable knife and a peeler. It provides different blade shapes for different preparation tasks, rather than four copies of the same knife. This is the natural wood version of the set.
Four tools with separate roles
The paring knife has a 10 cm straight-edged blade. It is the general preparation tool for fruit and vegetables and can also be used to trim meat. Its smooth edge differs from the regularly serrated edge of the second knife, also fitted with a 10 cm blade. That serrated profile is intended for cutting foods such as fruit and vegetables with a thick skin or hard crust.
The vegetable knife has a curved 7 cm blade, often described as a bird's-beak shape. It is suited to turning vegetables and preparing mushrooms. Its scraping back can clean young vegetables without necessarily removing their whole skin. The thin blade is designed for precise work; Opinel specifically states that it is not suitable for slicing large, hard-skinned vegetables such as squash or celeriac.
The peeler completes the three knives. Its 6 cm blade works for both right-handed and left-handed users. Opinel's guide describes peeling fruit and vegetables and removing lemon peel for zest. The pointed end can remove blemishes from potatoes. It therefore adds a distinct peeling function instead of simply duplicating the use of the paring knife.
Varnished beech and stainless steel
The Natural finish retains the light appearance of beech. This wood can range from yellowish to pinkish shades and has characteristic short, dark markings. The handles are varnished for added protection against moisture and dirt. That coating does not make wood unaffected by water, and these handles should not be confused with the polymer handles used in other Opinel collections.
The blades are made from martensitic stainless steel, for which Opinel states a hardness of 55 to 57 HRC. Corrosion resistance still calls for sensible cleaning: avoid prolonged contact with acids, salt water or cleaning agents. The four profiles cover complementary preparation tasks, rather than replacing a large knife for bulky cuts or hard vegetables.
Care after food preparation
Opinel recommends hand washing its kitchen and table knives to preserve their condition. Clean the tools after use, then dry both blades and handles. Looking after the wooden surface matters alongside caring for the cutting edge. Do not leave the handles damp for a prolonged period after rinsing, even though their finish is varnished.
